A batch of 300 Sri Lankan workers sent to Israel as seasonal agricultural workers returned to the country after successfully completing the agreement!
Lankan agri workers return from Israel:
Learn new trends in agriculture
Disna Mudalige
A batch of 300 Sri Lankan workers sent to Israel as seasonal agricultural workers returned to the country last week after successfully completing the agreement signed between Sri Lanka and Israel. They were sent by the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Agency (SLFEA) last October for a period of six months under a pilot project.Israel is world renowned for its use of modern and environmental friendly technology in agriculture.
This team was given a one week training on Hebrew language and Israel agricultural practices before they departed for Israel.
One of the workers W A Buddhika Ravinath (24) appreciated the opportunity they received to be exposed to the widespread application of high tech and cost effective agricultural mechanisms in Israel. He said they learnt that these mechanisms have helped to create high productivity.
He said that the entire Sri Lankan team of labourers were highly satisfied over the remuneration and other facilities they received from Israel, adding that they were treated well during their stay.
“We were paid Rs 450 per hour and over time earning about Rs 100,000 to 250,000 per month. We were able to save from this amount as our expenditure on food and accommodation was very less”, Ravinath said.
He also pointed out that some warned him not to go to Israel due to the prevailing conflict. However, he said that the country’s safety was ensured despite that.
H A Sugath Kumara (31), another woker sent to Israel, said that they received great support from higher officials there and had a very friendly working environment. Compared to his previous experience working in Saudi Arabia, he said he witnessed more positive working conditions in Israel. He also said that the Israel officials were highly satisfied of the Sri Lankan group.
Kumara said that he had the opportunity to work with various nationals and the majority were from Asia. Commenting on the modern technology used for agriculture, he said that various types of vegetables and fruits such as olive, carrot, orange, strawberry, grapes and avocado are cultivated over large landscapes including deserts despite adverse climate conditions.
“They supply water and fertilizer to cultivation through pipelines. The entire system is automated. Pesticides are applied to the cultivated lands from planes. Advanced technology is widely used for these tasks”, he observed.
A Chandana (34) said that over 3,000 Sri Lankans are currently working in Israel mostly as housemaids and part time workers. The returning workers expressed their gratitude to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and government as well as the Israel government, SLFEA Chairman Asanka Abeygunasekara and the authorities of the Indian Embassy for selecting them for this programme.

ILO will mark the centenary of International Women’s Day on 7th March with a panel discussion which will highlight the role of gender equality.!!!
Global unemployment rate for men 6% and 6.5% for women in 2010 —ILO
March 5, 2011, 6:39 pm
GENEVA (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) will mark the centenary of International Women’s Day on Monday 7 March with a panel discussion which will highlight the role of gender equality in securing a sustainable and equitable recovery.
Focusing on the theme – "Making the crisis recovery work for women!" – a panel of experts will discuss how policy measures in the wake of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression can ensure equal opportunities and treatment for women and men when it comes to jobs and working conditions. The panel will emphasize skills development and training policies, contributing to the UN theme for this Day: "Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women".
The first official International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1911 following a decision of the International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen the year before. By that time, in countries such as Austria and Germany, the main claim was the right to vote, while in the United States, women demonstrated against poor working conditions that led to a fire in a garment factory, which killed 146 workers, most of them women of immigrant origin.
One hundred years on, despite some progress there is still much to be done to achieve gender equality in the world of work. "The crisis has served to underscore and aggravate pre-existing inequality. Achieving gender equality remains a major challenge. Securing a sustainable and equitable recovery and a fair globalization demand gender-aware responses", said ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.
According to the latest ILO data both women and men continue to feel the impact of the economic crisis, with the global unemployment rate for men standing at 6 per cent in 2010 and 6.5 per cent for women.
Jane Hodges, Director of the ILO Bureau for Gender Equality points to the persistence of a clear segregation of women in sectors generally characterized by low pay, long hours and informal working arrangements. This is reflected in the bigger percentage of women who are trapped in vulnerable employment globally (51.8 per cent) compared to men (48.9 per cent). Women also fall behind men when it comes to access to training and education, especially in the developing world.
The ILO has upheld the principles of equal remuneration for work of equal value and of non discrimination since its founding in 1919. In 2009, the International Labour Conference passed a resolution on Gender Equality at the Heart of Decent Work guiding efforts towards a labour market in which all women and men can participate freely and actively. That same year the ILC adopted the Global Jobs Pact to help mitigate the social impact of the crisis. Amongst other measures, the Pact calls for recovery packages to take into account gender equality concerns.

JOB Fair is being organised by SL-Jobs Net together with USAID-RISEN (Reintegration&Stabilization in the East &North) to address lack of jobs..!!!
Firms urged to employ war zone youth
March 5, 2011, 7:03 pm
A Sri Lankan employment network is encouraging businesses to give jobs to over 15,000 youth in the former northern war zone who are seeking work and help improve ethnic relations in the country. "Access to the job market will renew hope in the community in the resettled area as well as renew the relationship between the North and South through improved shared economic opportunities," Sri Lanka Jobs Net said.
Lack of employment is a key issue in Sri Lanka’s north which is recovering from the effects of a 30-year ethnic war which ended in May 2009 enabling refugees to be resettled and infrastructure to be rebuilt.
Jobs Net said in a statement is it inviting members of the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon to take part in a job fair to be held in Vavuniya, a major town at the entrance to Sri Lanka’s north, on March 12, 2011.
The fair is being organised by Sri Lanka Jobs Net together with USAID-RISEN (Reintegration and Stabilization in the East and North) to address lack of access to employment opportunities for youth in the north.
"This is a window of opportunity for all employers to meet specific employment needs through selective job placement for over 15,500 pre-screened and registered job seekers from the north," the statement said.
Jobs Net said the job fair is part of a short term, comprehensive "accelerated employment service delivery system" developed to meet private sector manpower requirements.
The Jobs Net will coordinate job seekers, employers and vocational training institutions in one place to conduct a jobs fair in Vavuniya.
It invited employers from all over the country to "set up stalls in Vavuniya to hold interviews, provide employment opportunity information, to collect information from potential employees and to extend job offers to unemployed youth."
The fair will provide an opportunity for unemployed youth to identify available jobs in the market, what jobs they are skilled enough for consideration from potential employers and to encourage youth to seek skills training. – (LBO)

Migration is a global phenomenon today and it is becoming a social issue in Sri Lanka...!!!
The need for accurate and adequate information regarding migration
A.M. Ashoka Abeynayake
Migration is a global phenomenon today and it is becoming a social issue in Sri Lanka, as the number of migrants are on the increase in every passing year. People migrate to foreign countries in search of a better life for them personally and for their family members in general.
Lack of information and awareness of the rights of migrant workers contribute to their vulnerability as workers in the global labour market. Specially, women migrant workers face specific challenges and with the majority of migrant workers in Sri Lanka, been female, the problems they encounter bring hazards to their families in return. Therefore it has become vital and crucial need for the authorities to look into this problem with a greater commitment.
The alarming situation has prompted us to think in terms of finding reasonable solution before it develops to a grave national calamity.
Accurate, adequate and easily accessible information is critical as the basis of migration decision-making.
Women as well as men, use whatever information is available to them in order to decide on the appropriateness and costs and benefits of migration for themselves or their family members. Information is also critical to prevent, trafficking, since trafficking involves misinformation, deception and ignorance. Information needs vary, depending on the stage of the migration process.
Some kinds of information are more critical at the decision-making stage before the commitment to migrate has actually been made. Other kinds of information are more relevant to migrant workers who have already made their decision.
Many potential migrant workers, especially those who are considering the option of migration for the first time and women who have been living sheltered lives within patriarchal families, can have unrealistic expectations and perceptions about working for the first time and living abroad because;
* Information is usually shaped by the way the community, the media, returning migrants and recruitment agents portray the migration process and the living and working conditions in foreign countries;
* Recruitment agents and traffickers provide misleading information about job offers, conditions of work, the nature and type of the jobs, wages and benefits.
* Returning migrants often give a very rosy picture of their experience, or are reluctant to publicly display the negative sides of their migration experience or the real nature of their work abroad;
* The information provide by male migrant workers might not always be relevant to potential female migrants.
* Women themselves - because of their subordinate position within their families or society - often lack access to information about legal channels of recruitment, labour market opportunities at home and abroad and the general situation in potential countries of destination.
Before the actual commitment is made to seek employment abroad or to accept an offer of employment, potential female migrant workers and their families need the following information:
* Information on the migratory process, including on recruitment and employment abroad, as well as the documented or undocumented nature of the movement;
* Information on job opportunities at home and abroad, including the qualifications, skills and training needed;
* Information on the costs and benefits of migration.
* Information on the major dangers of the migration process, including the specific vulnerabilities of women migrants;
* Information on the rights and obligations of migrant workers;
* Information on required procedures/ clearances;
* Information on working and living conditions in potential countries of destination
The role of the government in countries of origin is critical in this issue. Governments need to take the main responsibility for information dissemination and for ensuring that the information provided by others, such as recruitment agents, is realistic and accurate.
Governments and social actors - workers’ and employers’ organizations, NGOs, religious organizations, community-based associations, the media - should actively develop strategies for reaching out to potential women migrants and their families and communities to ensure that they receive adequate, accurate and timely information to make sensible decisions on migration and to be well prepared for employment abroad.
As Sri Lankans, each and every citizen we should take steps in hand in hand to empower migrants in Sri Lanka from the 18th December - The International ‘Migrants Day’.

HOW TO PROGRESS IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT....!!! A PERSONAL EXAMPLE!!!
Til: beyouths groups (beyouths@yahoogroups.com)
Kopi: venugopalan.rengan@gmail.com
Linear Alkyl

NURSES HAVE LOT OF JOB OPPORTUNITIES!!!
Greener pastures for Lankan nurses
Nadira Gunatilleke
The first batch of Sri Lankan nurses selected for employment abroad by the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry, will leave to the United Arab Emirates in the first week of January next year, Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry sources said.
The sources said 14 Sri Lankan trained nurses received appointment letters from the Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva yesterday (19th Friday) at his office. Those nurses have obtained IELTS and other relevant qualifications.
Several other affluent Middle East countries have made requested the Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva to attract the services of 5,000 Sri Lankan nurses. Abu Dhabhi Oman and Libya are among them, the sources said.
According to Ministry sources, this will provide plenty of employment opportunities for Sri Lankan nurses who have the required training and experience. The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has already taken steps to provide a special training to a batch of 127 nurses in order to send them overseas by the end of this year and early next year.
Interviews will be conducted by end this month for the nurses who are keen to accept foreign employment. Countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia have also made similar requests from Sri Lanka. Some of the trained nurses will be sent to those countries.
The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has imposed several important conditions for the countries who wish to employ Sri Lankan nurses in order to ensure their safety, well-being and financial stability. The ministry would send nurses only to the countries that pay higher salaries, provide comfortable accommodation, safety and a life insurance share to them. The Ministry would pay special attention to these requirements when signing agreements with countries which have called for the services for nurses.
